My daughter has wanted to start some form of martial arts for ages, and I need to get fitter, we are both Neurodiverse and often struggle starting new activities.
Aston's was highly recommended locally and the adult classes start from 13 up so I can train alongside my daughter. I used the website contact form and Chris called me soon after. I mentioned our ADHD/Autism and he recommended we attend one of the quieter, less busy sessions. This demonstrated an understanding of neurodiversity and its challenges and made me feel supported before I'd even joined!
We signed up for the 'Pads and Bags' sessions and the 'Adult Kickboxing' classes, the joining fees were reasonable and we got our own gloves included. We get a joint membership discount which works out at about £10.00 each a week, for this we can attend as many of the 'Pads and Bags' sessions as we like, I think they run 3 or 4 days week and we can attend the adult kickboxing classes too, so the fees are great value and we get the flexibility of being able to move days if we need. There is a one month rolling membership which is great for beginners, we also got several free taster sessions to start with!
At the 'Pads and Bags' sessions Ben runs a series of 60 second drills for everyone while moving around providing 1 on 1 advice and tuition. It's hard work but lots of fun, we really enjoy attending.
The music could include a bit more 90's grunge & metal, but I'm going to need to learn a LOT more fighting skills before I try to steal the remote and replace a couple of kickboxing black belts as academy DJ!
I am a total fitness/fighting novice with physical health issues and like kicking less than Balrog from Streetfighter 2 so Ben suggests alternative methods or techniques and adapts the drills for me (whilst being too young to understand my retro gaming references!)
There is a genuine personalised approach, with members getting an individually tailored level of motivation and challenge, I never feel left behind or pushed too hard.
The academy building is spacious with plenty of good quality equipment and it is all always clean. There is parking on site and a reception area that parents can wait in and keep an eye on the class via the TV screens showing a live feed of the main gym area. If you are going to wait in this area though, take sunglasses.... There is a serious trophy collection, they've won more competitions than Rangers and Celtic combined!
We have not started the kickboxing classes yet, (I'm delaying getting punched out by my daughter! ) but can see and hear Chris running a session for the younger students in the area next to us and the kids look happy, safe and fully engaged. Chris and Ben clearly share a supportive and personal approach to their classes and students.
We are really happy we joined Aston's Kickboxing Academy and would absolutely recommend it without hesitation.
